Cornelius

With its beginning and a rich history in cotton farming in the 1900’s and the creation of the largest man-made lake in North Carolina, Cornelius is a vibrant, small town located on the western shores of Lake Norman.

Once called Liverpool, Cornelius was named after Joseph Benjamin Cornelius, the principal stockholder in a cotton mill that established the small town. Founded in 1893, Cornelius didn’t actually incorporate until 1905. Historians have traced the Town’s origin to a dispute over cotton weighing. The damming of the Catawba River to create Lake Norman was as influential as the cotton industry to the town’s development and growth. In 1963 Duke Power created Lake Norman as a “working” lake, for the generation of hydroelectric power.

Riding through Cornelius today, you can see the enormous growth that has occurred over the last 30 years. Through the 1990’s, the population of Cornelius grew by over 350%. Many communities offer resort style living while only being located only 15 minutes outside of Center City Charlotte.
